Yet, it illustrates the effect that there can be on the properties of the reaction, if the initial amounts of the reactants are not equal. This has two consequences. First, the molar masses of the reactants are not necessarily equal. The reaction is thus an example of a non-stoichiometric reaction, that is, a reaction in which the molar ratios of the reactants and products are not necessarily equal. When a non-stoichiometric reaction has been performed, the process involves a more important theoretical change. Indeed, the chemical reactants are known to exist in many different forms, which are labeled by their respective structures. In contrast, the products of the reaction are formed by just a single form, which is known as the chemical species. Figure 3 illustrates what we mean by the different forms in a non-stoichiometric reaction. Figure 4 shows how the chemical species of the product are formed by mixing the species of the reactants. The chemical species that appear in a non-stoichiometric reaction differ from one another in terms of their structures. One way to classify these structures is to note that the chemical species of the products of a non-stoichiometric reaction are formed of structures that are similar to those of the species of the reactants, but differ from those of the reactants by the presence of a molecular fragment called a fragment. In this picture, the fragment is usually called a spectator fragment. For a given chemical species, the composition of the fragment that is being separated is different
